9 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Booking Your Newborn Photography Session

Tips for Booking Your Newborn Photography Session

As a newborn baby photographer there are a number of questions I often get asked about how to prepare for your session. When to book, what is involved and what you can expect from the session. I have listed below some of my most FAQ’s to help you.

10 questions to ask when choosing a newborn photographer

How can I prepare for my newborn photography session?

I always suggest you pre-book your newborn session as soon as possible to ensure you have an allocated space in my diary. With just a small deposit you can secure your session and be booked in within the recommended time frame. The best time to book your newborn session slot is after your 12 or 20 week scan. I will book you into my diary based on your due date and will work my sessions around the arrival of your newborn to ensure we capture those perfect baby pictures at the best time.

The ideal time to photograph your baby is within the first 14 days of birth but no more than 21 days from birth. Typically, I schedule all newborn photography sessions between five and fourteen days after birth. Although I will photograph newborns at any age, I strongly encourage parents to have their session when babies are under two weeks of age as this is when they will still be all sleepy and curly for the perfect pictures.

Is it safe to take pictures of newborns?

Yes, newborn photography is completely safe, provided that the photographer has been trained in safe handling of newborns. It is also important to have first aid training and I am fully trained in all of these aspects.

How long should my newborn photoshoot take?

The duration of the newborn photoshoot will depend purely on your baby on the day. Some little ones take longer to settle than others and some need more breaks and milk top ups than others. On average I would say you can expect your session to last between 2-4 hours. I have the same routine that I follow for all babies and will never rush a session, therefore  allowing 4 hours ensures we have enough time to capture those magical moments. If you have twins or triplets I would suggest 3-5 hours for your session.

Can we get family / sibling pictures done during our newborn session?

Yes, of course. With all my newborn sessions I generally try and photograph siblings at the end of them. I do recommend that the child is brought at the end of the newborn session, or, if this isn’t possible, then bringing another adult with you that can take the child out during the newborn session to avoid them getting bored and restless. The studio can be very hot for them, so letting them have a break from it can be very beneficial. I would also suggest bringing books or a tablet to keep them amused. If you plan to have family and sibling pictures taken please notify me at the time of booking. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to be able to offer you a newborn session date/time that fits in with your child’s school or nursery timetable – session dates and times are dependent on when your baby is born.

What do I need to bring with me to my newborn photoshoot?

To allow consistency with my style of photography, all props and outfits will be provided so all you need to bring on the day is a change of clothes for yourself and your baby, as accidents do happen! You will also need three times the amount of milk you would usually use in that time frame if you are not breastfeeding. You will have lots of free time to chill out and relax during the session so feel free to bring along a book or your tablet/iPad etc.

How long can I expect to wait to receive my newborn pictures?

After your photoshoot you will be invited back into the studio within four weeks for your one hour viewing session. This is when you will have the opportunity to see all of your images and select your package.

What is the print credit included in your packages?

Your print credit in my packages is a value of money for you to use for purchasing prints or putting towards the cost of a framed picture or a bespoke piece of wall art. What you spend the print credit on is completely up to you. The reason I include this is because I am a strong believer in having your gorgeous images printed to display in your home.

Do you have pram access at the studio and is there car parking facilities?

Yes I sure do. You are more than welcome to bring along your pram and I will happily store it for you in the back office during your newborn session. There is plenty of on-street car parking around the studio.

Are you all ready to book? It’s really easy to confirm your newborn booking. All you have to do is email me through my contact form letting me know your due date. If I have availability then the full session fee is required to confirm your booking. This is a non-refundable amount.
