Style advice for your family photoshoot
So, you have finally been brave and decided to book in for your family portrait session with Ruth Charlotte Photography. But now the nerves are starting to kick in and you are worried about so many things. Firstly, I just want to let you know that being nervous for your family photoshoot is completely normal. All you want is for it to go smoothly with no tears, no tantrums and smiles all round so don't worry everyone will smash it on the day and it will all go perfectly. Up there with one of the most common questions I get asked is: What do we wear for our photoshoot?
So not only do you have yourself to dress for the session but you also have your full team to think about. First thing I always say is do not over think it. Try your best to stay simple but classy. It’s very easy to follow trends in fashion but it does not work well with your photoshoot (like last summer’s belly top trend for your teenage daughter will quickly become a fashion error down the line!). Certain trends are short lived and will instantly make your images look dated, so try and stick to stylish but classy.
So there you are standing in front of your wardrobe and you are so confused at what to pick for your photoshoot. When coming for a family photoshoot try and come up with a “theme” and stick to it for everyone. This is the best idea as it does not work well if mum comes in with a red jumper, dad with a yellow t-shirt and the children have baby blue and baby pink on. So often I will say to people pick a good colour theme and you can’t go wrong. I will pop some colour ideas below for you:
Whites/greys/navy's & denims
Whites & creams
Simple is always better for the photoshoot.
What NOT to wear
Make sure you completely avoid harsh bright colours and crazy patterns and florals. They do not work well at all and can be really distracting on the camera. I have listed a few clothing tips to avoid for your photoshoot.
No jumpers / hoodies
Outdoor jackets (unless it’s an outdoor photoshoot)
Character clothing (no Spiderman, Peppa Pig etc.)
Ladies avoid wearing short shirts or dresses unless you plan to only do standing images.
Other tips for your Photoshoot
Shoes - Don't worry too much about buying expensive footwear as more often than not I will ask you to remove your shoes and socks. Why do I suggest this? Honestly, there is nothing attractive about looking at the soles of someone’s dirty shoes especially when they are sitting for pictures. Plus it is very unlikely that everyone would have a similar style in footwear so it’s by far the best option to keep everyone the same and have bare feet - so get those feet washed before you come!
Clothing - Please make sure all outfits are freshly laundered and ironed for the photoshoot. Feel free to bring your outfits with you to change into in the studio to avoid getting crumpled in the car!
Fingers & Toes - Ensure everyone's fingers nails and toes are clean and please either remove all nail varnish or pop on a fresh coat before the session. Many people arrive at the studio and only at the last minute realise they have chipped nail varnish. If you think your child will refuse to take their socks off then please make sure they are wearing plain black or white socks depending on their outfit.
Fake Tan - Please avoid doing your tan the night before your session. If you are someone that wears tan please make sure you have applied it at least two days before the session and it’s a tan you have used before and are happy with the results.
Make up - For any mums that are looking to treat themselves and get their make up professionally done for the photoshoot (this is of course not compulsory) please ask your make up artist not to go over board with highlighter on your cheeks and nose as if too much is applied then the bounce back with studio lighting does not look good.
If you are still unsure about your session please do not hesitate to mail me to chat more about it. I am always happy to help in anyway I can. Looking forward to your session and will see you all very soon.
